WFP Deputy Executive Director Skau: The situation in Gaza is the worst I have ever seen

Skau, deputy executive director of the WFP, headquartered in Rome, Italy, commented on his fourth visit to Gaza since the start of the Israeli attacks in October 2023, in posts he shared on his account on the X platform.

"I've just returned from my fourth visit to Gaza since the conflict began. The situation is the worst I've ever seen. The needs are higher than ever, but our ability to respond has never been more constrained. Hunger is spreading, people are dying just trying to find food," Skau said.

Skau emphasized that WFP teams in Gaza are making every effort to deliver aid, saying, "Our teams are often caught in the crossfire, escorting food convoys through conflict zones. We are running out of fuel, spare parts, and basic communications equipment. Our national personnel are living in the midst of this crisis, facing the same dangers and hunger as all Gazans."

"We have the food, the capacity, and the preparation to deliver. During the last ceasefire, we sent 8,000 trucks to Gaza in 42 days. We can do it again, but all routes and entry points need to be opened and security ensured. And we need a ceasefire, which should be a step towards lasting peace," Skau said.

Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip

Following the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that came into effect on January 19, the Israeli army resumed its fierce attacks on the morning of March 18.

At least 57,523 Palestinians have been killed and 136,617 injured in Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.

Since March 18, when Israel broke the ceasefire, 6,964 people have lost their lives and 24,576 people have been injured in its attacks on Gaza.

Since May 27, the death toll has risen to 758 and the number of injuries to 5,005 people as a result of systematic attacks targeting Palestinians in distribution areas established by the Israeli-US-led Gaza Humanitarian Relief Foundation under the guise of humanitarian aid.

The Israeli army has begun implementing its offensive plan to expand and make permanent its occupation of the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that they will occupy the entire Gaza Strip.
