A new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General shows that thousands of people from all over the world describe cool people with similar characteristics. According to the news in the DailyMail; In the study conducted with approximately 6,000 participants in 12 different countries including the USA, Australia, Chile, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Spain, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey between 2018 and 2022, the participants were asked to imagine a person they thought was “cool”, “uncool”, “good” or “bad”. Then, the personality traits and values of these people were evaluated.

The results revealed that cool people were associated with similar qualities across cultures, with “good” people perceived as more agreeable, warm, conscientious and conventional, while “cool” people were described as more outgoing, adventurous, open-minded, autonomous and strong. “Everyone wants to be cool, or at least avoid the stigma of being uncool. Society needs cool people because they challenge the norm, inspire change and move culture forward,” said Dr. Todd Pezzuti, co-lead author of the study.

Another researcher, Caleb Warren, noted that cool people are often perceived as likeable or admirable: “While they may resemble good people in these ways, they also have different characteristics, such as being hedonistic and powerful.”

Researchers stated that the concept of "cool" began to take shape with similar values around the world under the influence of global popular culture elements such as fashion, music and cinema, and turned into a structure that appealed to wider audiences.

Researchers say they’re starting to answer that question, but the fact remains that no matter where you go in the world, cool people have one striking thing in common: originality, expressiveness, and influence.
