120,000 people are under judicial control

The judiciary has suffered significant damage during the AKP government. As citizens' faith in justice steadily wanes, Türkiye has witnessed countless examples of the politicization of the judiciary. Unfair court rulings against dissidents have eroded trust in the judiciary.
The witch hunt against dissidents has led to prisons being overcrowded. As of July 1, 2025, prison population in Türkiye has reached 410,135, exceeding capacity by 115,135.
With investigations launched against opposition figures, especially journalists, the judiciary has been transformed into a "tool for silencing political opponents." Increasing investigations into opposition figures based on their news reports or social media posts have also led to the proliferation of judicial control orders.
BirGün examined the number of individuals subject to "judicial control" provisions under Article 109 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The number of individuals subject to judicial control, which legal experts define as "a practice that complements arrest and sometimes even produces more severe consequences than arrest," has been reported to reach nearly 120,000.
According to Ministry of Justice data, as of July 1, 2025, the number of individuals under judicial control stood at 119,413. The sheer number of juvenile detainees under supervision and monitoring was also noteworthy. According to data dated July 1, 2025, the number of juvenile detainees under supervision and monitoring was recorded as 9,371.
