Calls continue for the immediate release of Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık , who was arrested on March 23 as part of an investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and is suffering from health problems.
The Istanbul branch of the Human Rights Association (İHD) Prison Commission issued a statement regarding Çalık. Prison Commission Co-Chair Eren Keskin stated that Çalık's immediate release was necessary based on reports documenting his illness. "This is something that doesn't fit any legal conscience," he said. "It's irrational, unconscionable, and unlawful. We demand Mehmet Murat Çalık's immediate release."
REACTION FROM IMAMOĞLUÇalık, who was referred to Izmir City Hospital for examinations, was not allowed to meet with his mother, Gülseren Çalık, in the prison ward of the hospital, which also drew criticism.
Ekrem İmamoğlu , the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor and CHP presidential candidate, who is being held in Silivri , said that the events are a manifestation of oppression. İmamoğlu asked, "What kind of oppression, what kind of heartlessness is this? A report is issued stating that it's impossible for him to remain in prison in Izmir, and he's referred to Istanbul for a forensic examination. Isn't there a forensic examination in Izmir? Even that's not enough; after the forensic examination, he's sent to Metris Prison, and from there to Izmir. Even that's not enough; the Forensic Medicine Institution decides that all the tests must be redone. What kind of oppression, what kind of heartlessness is this? What purpose do you serve?"
İmamoğlu expressed his reaction with the following words: "I am addressing the ambitious individuals who carry out these duties: Did you emulate the era remembered by a car model? Did you take inspiration from the unsolved murders of the era when you committed torture and cruelty? In whose name and to whom do you serve? The judiciary of this nation and country will hold you accountable when the day comes."
ANNE ÇALIK IS IN THE HOSPITALPresident Çalık recently underwent another surgery for cancer, a condition he had previously defeated twice. Çalık lost 21 kilograms (40 pounds), and as his health worsened, the Forensic Medicine Institution ordered further examinations. Çalık, who was transferred to Izmir City Hospital, is not allowed to see his family. Gülseren Çalık, worried about her son's health, continues to wait outside the hospital .
Raise your voice against oppressionİmamoğlu, in his call to his party's rally held in Trabzon yesterday, said, "I expect a strong voice from the land of my birth against oppression, injustice, unfairness and lawlessness."
Preserve Your HopeMeanwhile, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan delivered İmamoğlu's message to the "Harvest Festival" held in Beykoz. Aslan said, "He sent you the message, 'Keep hope, better days are near.'"
