The Housing Development Administration (TOKİ) of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has completed the construction work it carried out in the Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa, which was affected by the February 6 earthquakes. In the project consisting of 2,738 houses, citizens have started to settle into their new homes. In addition to the houses, 2 mosques, 1 school and 8 commercial units were also built in the region. TOKİ expert Melih Dilbaş said that the houses were built on a raft foundation with a tunnel formwork system.
Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum shared images of citizens moving into their homes on his social media account. Quoting the words of the rightful owner Ayşe Elman, “Even if they give me 10 apartments from outside, I still wouldn’t leave here,” Minister Kurum gave the message, “The name of this trust: TOKİ. Life has started again in our 2,738 homes in Şanlıurfa Karaköprü. Together for a strong tomorrow.”
Ayşe Elman, one of the rightful owners, drew attention to the durability of TOKİ housing: Before, we wanted our balconies, houses, and rooms to be large. But now we say that the beauty or width of the house is not important. What is important is its durability. Even if they gave me 10 apartments from somewhere else, I would not leave TOKİ. TOKİ buildings are really strong.
Now our school, electricity, water, natural gas, everything is complete. The children have also found their own rooms. Since I moved here, my children have started to sleep well. I said, 'This is my home now'...
Another rights holder, Adem Yıldızsoy, emphasized the speed and quality of the construction: I was saying that the construction would take at least 4-5 years. They were saying that it would be finished early. We could not accept it because we were saying that so many houses had been demolished, they would not be able to finish it. We were coming and looking. The work was going on rapidly.
The work continued 24/7, day and night. If it had not been fast, day and night, maybe it would not have been possible to make it to this date. Now, shops are being built, markets are being built. Thank God our government and state stood behind us. And they worked quickly. It was both solid and they grew it. There are roads, surroundings, gardens... They planted flowers and trees. They made a park. They really built luxurious villa-like houses. It was beyond our imagination.
Yıldızsoy thanked Minister Kurum and said, “He really said ‘I will do it’ and he did it, and he is doing it. So what else can we do but thank him for that? We are grateful. Our Minister Murat kept his promise.”
