Foreign office issues urgent ‘take care’ travel advice for a popular tourist spot

British tourists heading to a popular tourist destination have been urged to “take care” while performing one activity during their trip. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Turkey warning about “serious injury or death”.

A large number of holidaymakers flock to Turkey every year to enjoy the scenic beaches and warm weather. However, the Foreign Office has advised tourists to practice caution while swimming in Turkey. According to the FCDO, there have been cases of people drowning in the sea and in the swimming pools in Turkey.

The advice which has been updated on August 22 stated: “Every year, people drown in the sea and in swimming pools in Turkey. Always supervise children, even if they can swim or there is a lifeguard present.

“Take care when swimming in the sea. Some beaches may have strong undercurrents.”

The holidaymakers have also been requested not to dive into unknown water. It added: “Hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious injury or death. Do not dive into unknown water. Follow local advice if jellyfish or urchins are present.

“Many beaches have a flag system. Make sure you understand the system and follow any warnings (a red flag means you must not enter the water). Follow instructions from lifeguards. Take extra care and seek local advice if there are no lifeguards, flags, or signs.”

The latest advice come months after the FCDO issued an update about paragliding in Turkey after several incidents where UK tourists have either lost their lives or sustained serious injuries while paragliding in the the area.

In April, a tragic paragliding accident in Fethiye, Turkey claimed the lives of a British tourist and his pilot after their parachute failed shortly after takeoff from a 6,500-foot mountain.

The pair, aged 22 and 29, fell onto rocky terrain and died at the scene. The incident, which occurred during a high-adrenaline flight, led to temporary suspension of paragliding activities in the area. Authorities have not released the names of those involved.

Last year British teenager Lily Nichol was left in a serious condition after being hit by a paraglider while she ate a meal with her family on holiday. The 15-year-old from Chester-le-Street in County Durham, was injured on the final day of her holiday in Oludeniz as she ate a pizza.
