The first victim of the Lisbon funicular derailment has been named as the death toll rises to 17. A father of a three-year-old boy from Germany died in the collision and his mother is in critical condition. The boy was among 21 people injured and pulled from the derbis by a police officer, CNN Portugal has reported. Yesterday evening at around 6pm local time (5pm BST), Lisbon's famous Gloria Funicular derailed and crashed.

Multiple foreigners were injured in the crash as the streetcar was travelling in a tourist hotspot, according to Margarida Castro Martins, head of Lisbon's Civil Protection Agency.

The Gloria funicular travels from Restauradores, a square in the middle of Lisbon, up to the picturesque area of Bairro Alto. It takes just three minutes to travel one-way. There are two carriages of the Gloria funicular, transporting over three million passengers each year, according to various Lisbon tourist guides.
