M1 traffic LIVE: Early morning mysery for motorists as they face long queues

A stretch of the M1 in Hertfordshire was closed on Thursday morning. It has since reopened but some minor delays remain between junction 1 and junction 5.
National Highways says: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
A live traffic map from National Highways shows the location of the M1 closure. Traffic congestion is also building on the southbound carriageway ahead of rush hour.
A motorway camera has picture traffic delays on teh M1 due to the closure. Drivers should leave extra time for their journeys.
A diversion is in place for motorists to follow. National Highways says:
Exit M1 at J5 onto Berrygrove Interchange Take the exit for the A41 south Travel along the A41 south to the roundabout (Apex Corner) with the A1 Take the 2nd exit on to the A1 Then take the exit for the A41 and stay on this road until the Brent Cross Interchange Take the 3rd exit on to the A406, here you can head towards the M1 or the A406A stretch of the M1 is shut in Hertfordshire on Thursday morning. The motorway is closed heading southbound between junction 5 for Watford and junction 1 for Brent Cross.
National Highways says: "The M1 in Hertfordshire is closed southbound between J5 (Watford) and J1 (Brent Cross) due to a planned overnight closure which has over run its pre agreed end time of 05:30."
