New York Shooting UPDATES: Four dead including 'hero' cop as gunman opens fire

Police have yet to identify a motive for Monday's shooting, and have confirmed that the suspect had no prior criminal record.
They did however say that the gunman in the New York City office tower shooting had a "documented mental health history."
He was formally named in the press conference as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas in Nevada, who had travelled across multiple states in the space for a few days to reach the sight of his unexpected bloodbath.
The man killed four people in total, including the police officer in the lobby.
"Officer Islam was married with two young boys. His wife is pregnant with their third child. He's assigned to the four seven precinct in the Bronx. He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way, he made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city, he died as he lived, a hero," Ms Tisch added at the news conference Monday evening.
Officer Islam was shot in the back as he acted as a security guard in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue. He was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but sadly succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a short while later.
The off duty police officer killed in Monday's mass shooting, has been formally named as Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old man, who had been with the force since early 2022.
Eric Adams, New York City Mayor, paid tribute to Mr Islam at a press conference, describing the horror of his death as "despicable".
He said his thoughts are with the families of those affected.
"This never gets easy," he admitted, before going on to tell how Mr.Islam had been a father of two, and an immigrant from Bangladesh.
Mr Adams identified him as "Officer Islam", and called him a "true blue New Yorker". He says he met the family of the murdered officer, and "I told them he's a hero".
CCTV footage of the the harrowing scene unfolding in Manhattan showed a man entering the lobby of 345 Park Avenue at 52nd Street in Manhattan shortly before 6:30pm on Monday evening.
Upon entry to the building, he immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer and members of the public, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference.
The shooter than proceeded to make his way to the elevator bank where he shot a security guard, before heading up to the 33rd floor of the building, shooting another person, and then finally shooting himself in the chest.
In a chilling twist, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch has revealed that the suspected gunman allowed a woman to walk free while his shooting spree was underway.
After shooting several people while entering the building, the gunman called for an elevator to the higher floors. Upon arrival of the elevator, he allowed an unnamed female to exit and flee the scene unharmed.
Shane Devon Tamura, has been named as the 27-year-old suspected gunman in Monday’s attack at a Manhattan skyscraper.
It is understood that Tamura traveled cross-country before arriving in New York City, with his vehicle having traveled through Colorado on July 26, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a Monday evening news conference.
Tamura, who was from Las Vegas, traveled through Nebraska and Iowa on July 27 and then was seen in Columbia, New Jersey as recently as 4:24 p.m. Monday before making the final leg of his journey to NYC.
The suspect in Monday's shooting in Midtown Manhattan died from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during the news conference.
At the same conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the public that the alleged shooter had been carrying an M4 assault rifle.

Employees at Blackstone - an investment firm - barricaded themselves in their office during Monday's ordeal.
They used sofas to do so, piling up furniture against the office door, with images of the scene shared on X.

The suspect in Monday’s deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan was a 27-year-old who lived in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to officials, he had no significant criminal background.
Originally born in Hawaii, the suspected gunman later moved to Las Vegas. He had a concealed carry permit for a handgun as well as an expired private investigator license in Nevada.
He was also understood to have been a competitive football player in his youth.
According to photographs taken from the scene and shared by police, a photo of the alleged gunman featured him walking into the building while carrying a long gun.
The suspect was later found dead in a stairwell in the building from what is believed to be a self-inflicted injury.
Although snippets about the suspect’s past have been made public, police have not yet publicly identified the man that they say was the “lone suspect” in the shooting.
Following the tragic death of an NYPD officer, after he was shot in the back during Monday's shooting incident, multiple tributes have begun to trickle in to share their condolences.
One social media user wrote on Instagram: "Tonight, a chair at the dinner table is left empty. Tonight, a family grieves a loss that cannot be measured. Tonight, a hero made the ultimate, selfless sacrifice in the line of duty."
They paid an emotional tribute to the police officer, thought to have died in the mass shooter horror.
The suspected gunman, who is now dead, had a concealed carry license for a handgun, according to law enforcement officials.
The suspect, who is believed to be a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, also had an expired private investigator license.
The shooter, who has tentatively been identified as a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, is also dead from what police believe is a self-inflicted injury.
New York lawmakers have expressed their horror and grief at the deadly shooting that unfolded in midtown Manhattan on Monday.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York wrote he was “deeply disturbed by the horrific shooting.”
“Praying hard for the brave NYPD officer impacted and all other victims of this tragedy,” Jeffries wrote. “May God watch over our city during this challenging moment.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer meanwhile said he’s “praying for everyone affected,” adding that “we must do more to stop gun violence in America.”
Monday's shooting took place at a skyscraper in a crowded part of Midtown Manhattan, just blocks away from bustling tourist hotspots like the Grand Central Station and the Museum of Modern Art.
The 634-foot skyscraper, which is located at 345 Park Avenue, takes up a whole city block and is one of just a handful of buildings in the city with its own zip code.
It is also located close to the Rockefeller Center and is just a few blocks south of Central Park.
The “lone shooter” thought to have shot at least three people and killed a police officer by shooting him in the back at a midtown Manhattan skyscraper is dead, the New York Police Department has confirmed in a statement.
“At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter is dead,” the agency wrote on X.
In a tragic update, the New York Police Department has confirmed one of its officers has been killed in the line of duty.
"We are deeply saddened to learn that two NYPD officers have been shot, and we mourn the tragic loss of one of them," they wrote in a statement.
"Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and colleagues of the officers affected. We stand in solidarity with the NYPD during this difficult time and honor the bravery and sacrifice of all those who serve to protect our communities."
It is unclear if any other officers were shot.
The FBI has dispatched federal agents to help local police according to the agency's deputy director Dan Bongino.
"New York Field Office management personnel and agents are responding to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan," Bongino says in an X post.
A witness who saw the terrifying situation unfold told Fox News that he saw huge commotion.
"I saw a rush of people come from behind me... Somebody said 'gunshots, gunshots' and then I turned around and more people were running.
"I saw a bunch of cops, guns drawn, going into the side entrance."
He then revealed that police officers took an injured man out - and it is thought he was the officer shot.
At least six people have been shot - including one police officer, police sources have revealed.
A very heavy police presence continues to remain on Park Avenue, where the building houses some of the country’s top financial firms and the NFL.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots late on Monday afternoon, with the alleged gunman seen carrying an AR-15-style rifle.

NFL emplyees working at 345 Park Avenue have been told to shelter inside the building - rather than evacuate - it is understood, as police work to secure the building.
An NFL security alert sent to employees reads: "Do not exit the building. Secure your location and hide until law enforcement clears your floor. Please switch phones to silent."
The skyscraper involved in the shooting includes multiple high profile tenants - including the NFL, Deutsche Bank, and the Blackstone Group.
Roads and mass transit are shut down in area of the active shooter incident in New York City.
At least one police officer and one civilian have been shot at the incident inside an address on Park Avenue in New York City, two senior NYC officials have confirmed.
They have not yet disclosed the nature and extent of any injuries.
Officers from the NYPD have warned people to avoid the Midtown Manhattan area of the city due to ongoing 'police activity'
Roads are closed as police investigate the active shooting situation currently unfolding.
"Due to police activity, expect traffic delays, road closures, mass transit disruptions a heavy presence of emergency personnel in the area of Park Avenue and 53rd Street in Manhattan. Use alternate routes to avoid the area and allow for additional travel time."
