Teen charged during hospital visit after nurses and police officers allegedly assaulted

A teenager admitted to the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital for treatment found themselves facing numerous charges after allegedly turning violent toward staff and security.
The 17-year-old was brought to the hospital by EMS early Friday morning, police said, and caused a disturbance which included pulling the fire alarm and making threats to hospital employees.
They said the teen assaulted the nurses trying to administer treatment, and when police arrived, three officers were attacked.
"This incident highlights the increasing violence faced by emergency service workers, including paramedics, hospital staff, security, firefighters and police when responding to individuals in medical or mental health crisis," St. Thomas police spokesperson Samantha Wakefield wrote in an email.
CBC News has asked whether the healthcare workers or the officers were treated for injuries, and will up update this story when that is received.
The youth was charged with the following offences:
- Three counts of assault a peace officer
- Two counts of assault
- Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm
- False alarm of fire
