Travelling abroad isn’t always possible, and with popular holiday destinations becoming increasingly crowded, more Brits are looking closer to home for their next coastal escape. The UK is blessed with spectacular seaside villages, many of which can even rival international hotspots.

One of those hidden gems is located on the south coast of England, and it’s been compared to none other than Portugal’s Algarve. West Lulworth, a picturesque village in Dorset, is home to the famous Durdle Door - a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Albandeira Arch in southern Portugal.

Both coastal spots feature striking rock formations, turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs that make them look almost identical in photos.

While the Algarve is known for its Mediterranean climate and beachside resorts, Dorset offers a distinctly British take on the same rugged beauty, without the need to board a plane.

The Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretches for 95 miles and is packed with geological wonders, fossil-strewn beaches, and sweeping views.

Durdle Door itself is one of the most photographed landmarks in the country and has been named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the UK.

With thatched cottages, coastal pubs and easy access to some of England’s best walking routes, it’s a perfect escape for anyone craving sun, sea and calm. And with Lulworth Cove just a short walk away, visitors can enjoy swimming, kayaking or boat trips in the crystal-clear water.

There’s plenty to see and do in the area, from guided hikes to fossil hunting, or visiting the historic Lulworth Castle.

Nearby attractions also include Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre and the Tank Museum, which host events year-round, according to Visit Dorset.

Accommodation in the village ranges from cosy B&Bs to seafront cottages, though it’s wise to book ahead in peak season due to limited space in the peaceful coastal resort.
