Maroš Šefčovič knows how to always strike the right tone. The man tasked with protecting Europe from the worst has a career as a diplomat, working in Bratislava, Tel Aviv, and Brussels. He has 35 years of foreign policy experience, and he speaks fluent English and French. When Donald Trump was in the White House, from 2017 to 2021, Šefčovič served as Vice President of the European Commission. Now, he is responsible for EU trade policy in the Brussels-based agency, and the Europeans' hopes of still being able to defuse the tariff conflict with the US through diplomatic means rest on him. So far, Šefčovič has borne this burden with a smile.
