The button with the inscription "Nuclear power? No thanks" is turning fifty. Will we be able to use it for another few decades?
(SZ) Among the pleasing manifestations of the otherwise aesthetically underserved 1970s is the yellow button with the smiling sun and the succinct sentence that cheekily parodied the culture of polite clichés: " Nuclear power ? No thanks." Anyone who was young, bushy-haired, and interested in saving humanity at the time fastened this button to their overalls. A safety pin inserted into the hollow of the metal button made this ever-present political demonstration a harmless—today we would say safe—occasion. That is, it was harmless only in the sense that, unless you were too stupid, you couldn't prick your finger while wearing the button. If you got into the wrong circles, you could easily get a slap in the face for displaying your aversion to nuclear energy.
