27 hunting dogs die on Mediterranean ferry en route from Barcelona to Mallorca

Twenty-seven hunting dogs died in the cargo hold of a ferry traveling from Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca. How this could have happened is still completely unclear.
When a ferry arrived in the port of Palma de Mallorca on Saturday morning, those in charge made a horrific discovery. In the cargo hold, which had been transporting 36 dogs, they found 27 dead hunting dogs; the rest were unconscious.
According to the " Mallorca Zeitung, " the Guardia Civil's nature conservation unit, Seprona, immediately launched an investigation. The crucial question is whether the transporter's ventilation system was not activated. This could have led to a lack of oxygen and a sharp rise in temperature.
Autopsies of the dogs are expected to determine the exact cause of death. "It was negligence on the part of the transport company," the affected hunters told the "Mallorca Zeitung".
The animals belonged to hunters from Mallorca who were conducting hunting exercises in Lithuania. According to the report, they were transported by WeTravelHome, a company specializing in animal transport. The hunters are now demanding a thorough investigation.
Transporting hunting dogs in enclosed vans is permitted by law, while other dogs are treated differently. Rules for dogs on ferries vary depending on the ferry company, but generally, dogs must be leashed and muzzled.
They are often not allowed in restaurants or other indoor areas unless it is a pet-friendly cabin that has been booked in advance. Dogs must be able to relieve themselves in designated areas, and an EU pet passport with valid rabies vaccinations is required for travel.
- Arrival: It can be helpful to get your dog used to the boat trip before the journey. Avoid feeding your dog shortly before boarding.
- Safety: Secure your dog well during the crossing, especially if he is anxious.
- Water: Bring plenty of water, especially if it's warm. Some ferry companies provide water bowls.
