Cuba suffers a new national blackout after the total disconnection of the electrical system

The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines reported this Wednesday a "total disconnection" of the national electrical system , leaving the island completely in the dark since 9:14 a.m.

According to the Electric Union (UNE), the immediate cause was the unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant (CTE), located in the province of Matanzas and considered one of the country's main generators, with a capacity of at least 330 megawatts.

The agency announced on its social media that it has already begun the restoration process, although the exact causes of the outage are still under investigation.

This power outage comes just days after several eastern Cuban provinces suffered a massive blackout last Sunday. On that occasion, the interruption was caused by a trip on the 220-kilovolt power line, which left the region from Las Tunas to Guantánamo without power.

Power was fully restored on Monday, but the country now faces a new nationwide energy crisis.

Impact and reactions

On social media, users began reporting the system outage early this morning , while international media confirmed the collapse. Some analysts point out that the island is facing a pattern of continuous failures that reflects the fragility of its energy infrastructure.

The state-owned company UNE stated in its statement: "We will continue to provide information," although it has not yet specified how long a full recovery will take.

A recurring energy crisis

Cuba has been experiencing a serious crisis in its electricity sector for years , marked by aging thermoelectric plants, fuel shortages, and maintenance limitations. The prolonged and increasingly frequent blackouts have generated social unrest and become a sensitive political issue for the government.

Wednesday's "total disconnection" adds to a long list of incidents that keep the country in constant tension over new energy shortages.
