Germany will organize a humanitarian airlift to Gaza together with Jordan, France, and the United Kingdom to help the population of this territory, which the UN says is suffering from "alarming levels" of malnutrition, Prime Minister Friedrich Merz announced Monday.

The airlift will be designed to "deliver food and medical supplies," Merz explained at a press conference in Berlin.
"We know this only represents minimal help for the people of Gaza, but it's still a contribution we're happy to make ," said Merz, who will host Jordan's King Abdullah II in Berlin on Tuesday.
The German chancellor, one of Israel's staunchest supporters in the war against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, called on Israel "to immediately, comprehensively, and sustainably improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation" in Gaza. He said the measures implemented this weekend by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are only a first step.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is scheduled to travel to the region on Thursday to advance negotiations on a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
US President Donald Trump, who has so far been largely silent on the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, said there are signs of a "real famine" and promised more aid, including the opening of unfenced "food distribution centers."
Some 2.4 million Palestinians have been besieged in Gaza by Israel since the beginning of the war triggered by an attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023, in Israeli territory.
