Latest political news, live | The Supreme Court meets to consider Cerdán's request for release from prison

Good morning. We're kicking off our live coverage of the latest political news this Tuesday, July 22nd.

The Supreme Court is holding a closed-door hearing today to determine whether to keep former Socialist leader Santos Cerdán in pretrial detention, who is being investigated for his alleged role in bribery deals for public works contracts, or to grant his request for release. Judges Juan Ramón Berdugo, Pablo Llarena, and Antonio del Moral will meet at 10:30 a.m. to hear the defense arguments for the former number three of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) for his release. The arguments will be opposed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the popular accusations led by the Popular Party (PP).

Meanwhile, Basque businessman Antxon Alonso , owner of the company Servinabar, linked to the alleged rigging of public contracts in the Koldo case , is summoned to the Senate at 11:00, 15 days after testifying in the Supreme Court, where he denied that Cerdán was his partner.

Also at 11:00 a.m., Congress will debate in an extraordinary plenary session the ratification of three decree-laws on advance payments to regional and local governments, the reinforcement of the electricity system after the blackout, and the declaration of cultural events as being of public interest. It remains to be seen whether the government will obtain the necessary support to push through all three. The plenary session will likely give final approval to the reform of the Lower House Regulations to incorporate inclusive language and electronic voting, as well as to regulate the work of accredited journalists. The approval of the regulations will face opposition from the PP and Vox.

The bill creating the State Public Health Agency (Aesap), the body that will manage and coordinate health emergencies, is ready for its final debate in Congress, following a difficult parliamentary process that even saw the law lapse four months ago.

The Council of Ministers will meet at 9:30 a.m. and will approve the Classified Information Bill and submit it to the Congress of Deputies for parliamentary approval. The Government also plans to approve the protocol detailing how the relocation of unaccompanied migrant minors will be carried out, a model that plans to transfer approximately 3,000 young people from the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla to other regions starting August 28.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez continues his Latin American tour in Montevideo, where he will meet with President José Mujica's widow, Lucía Topolansky.
