Tel Aviv accuses Spain of leading the "anti-Israeli crusade": "It is on the wrong side of history."

Tel Aviv accuses Spain of leading the "anti-Israeli crusade": "It is on the wrong side of history."

The Israeli embassy in Spain issued a strongly worded statement on Wednesday strongly condemning statements by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of "demonizing" his country and adopting a "morally indefensible" stance on the Middle East conflict.

"Until just a few days ago, Iranian ballistic missiles rained down on Israeli cities for twelve consecutive days. 29 civilians were killed , hundreds were injured, residential neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, and millions of Israeli citizens were forced to take shelter daily to protect their lives," begins the text, distributed through the social network X.

In the midst of the offensive, Israel denounces that the Spanish government did not condemn the attacks "even once" and, instead, "launched an anti-Israeli crusade," even calling for the suspension of European agreements with the Hebrew state and an arms embargo "on the country that was being attacked."

Deeply regrettable and morally indefensible

"This is not only deeply regrettable; it is morally indefensible," the embassy concluded, emphasizing Israel's right to defend itself as "a democratic country facing existential threats on multiple fronts."

The text concludes by thanking other European leaders for their support and emphasizing that Spain's position "places Spain at the most extreme—and increasingly isolated—margins of the European position on the Middle East." According to Israel, the Spanish government "is unfortunately on the wrong side of history."

This disagreement adds to many others that Pedro Sánchez has experienced since becoming Prime Minister. The most recent occurred with Donald Trump during the NATO summit in The Hague, but he has also experienced tensions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ; Argentine President Javier Milei ; Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum ; and other European leaders, such as Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever .
