The Basque Country village that Anne Igartiburu considers part of her identity

The Basque Country village that Anne Igartiburu considers part of her identity

Anne Igartiburu has been one of the most recognizable faces on Spanish television for almost three decades. The host of programs like D Corazón has appeared countless times on the small screen over the past 30 years. Despite being one of the most celebrated faces in the national industry, she returns to her hometown, located in the heart of the Basque Country, whenever her work commitments allow.

The presenter was born in the town of Elorrio, a village located in the province of Vizcaya , bordering both Guipúzcoa and Álava. This beautiful municipality is one of the most important in the Duranguesado region, as evidenced by its historic buildings and traditional architecture. It also boasts an extraordinary natural setting, where Anne Igartiburu herself enjoys strolling whenever she has the opportunity.

Elorrio was the first town in Biscay to be declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1964, as stated on the Official Spanish Tourism Portal. This town nestled in the Ibaizábal Valley has been very important in the region since the mid-14th century, something that can be seen in the beautiful palatial stone houses built in the 16th and 17th centuries that are found throughout its street network.

In addition to its fifty palaces and the magnificent Berriozabaleta Fountain, the municipality also boasts other architectural gems, such as the 15th-century Church of the Immaculate Conception , the same period as the San Agustín de Etxebarria Church. These churches stand out among the fifty examples of palatial architecture found in Anne Igartiburu's homeland, who feels "very connected" to her roots, as she has made clear on her social media recently.

In the surrounding area, you can also see authentic gems like the Arguiñeta necropolis, tombs with over a thousand years of history hidden in the San Adrián hermitage. The natural surroundings are also characterized by towering peaks, such as Mount Anboto and Mount Udalaitz, where the presenter strolls when she returns to her hometown to unwind.

Elorrio is, of course, a rural paradise and a true haven of peace, perfect for a weekend getaway and a few hours away from your daily routine. Few towns in the Basque Country can compare with the heritage and natural beauty of this Biscayan town, to which Anne Igartiburu returns whenever she can.

How to get to Elorrio, Anne Igartiburu's village

The town of Elorrio is located just 45 kilometers from the city of Bilbao, which translates to a drive of barely half an hour from the capital of Biscay. To get there from the city, take the N-637 and then continue along the AP-8 until you turn off onto the N-636. Finally, a short distance from the town, take the BI-2632, which leads to the historic center of the town.
