This is how the 2025 Copa Argentina draw looked after River Plate's victory.

This is how the 2025 Copa Argentina draw looked after River Plate's victory.

This Saturday, the final match of the 2025 Copa Argentina Round of 16 was played. This national competition, strangely enough, already has five teams qualified for the quarterfinals: Independiente Rivadavia, Argentinos Juniors, Belgrano, Lanús, and Tigre. In the closing stages of the second round, River Plate defeated San Martín de Tucumán 3-0 and secured a spot in the round of 16. Tournament details are available at canchallena.com.

El Millonario didn't shine, but they clearly outplayed one of the protagonists of the Primera Nacional. It was enough with the flashes of Facundo Colidio, the strong tandem between Marcos Acuña and the new reinforcement Matías Galarza Fonda, and the brilliance of a world champion, Gonzalo Montiel, who scored a brace (the other goal was scored by Giuliano Galoppo) and owned the right flank in defense and attack.

The resounding victory also served to end the losing streak for the "big" teams in this edition of the Copa Argentina. Boca Juniors lost 2-1 to Atlético Tucumán in the round of 16, and San Lorenzo and Independiente fell in the round of 16 to Tigre and Belgrano, respectively. Racing, meanwhile, plays Deportivo Riestra this Sunday, also in the round of 16, where Marcelo Gallardo's team will face Unión de Santa Fe.
