Angélica Liddell today received the National Theatre Award , granted annually by the Ministry of Culture through the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM) and endowed with 30,000 euros. The jury highlighted, according to the INAEM statement, the impact of her work 'Dämon. El funeral de Bergman', "which encapsulates a critical way of working that makes no concessions and invites reflection and debate." It added: "With this piece, she became the first Spanish artist to open the prestigious Avignon Festival in 2024, where she has been programmed on numerous occasions."

The decision of this award also highlights that "the artist has also shown other creations such as 'Vudú (3318) Blixen' and 'Terebrante', with which she has consolidated a career as a playwright, director and performer defined by a language of enormous risk and quality , which has confirmed her as a reference both inside and outside Spain for contemporary stage creation."

Angélica Liddell is the stage name of Catalina Angélica González Cano (Figueras, 1966), playwright, director and actress and one of the most influential contemporary creators on the international scene, according to the Inaem (National Institute of Statistics and Census). A graduate in Psychology and Dramatic Arts, she began her playwriting career in 1988 with the play 'Greta Wants to Suicide', for which she received the Ciudad de Alcorcón Award. During her early days, she also wrote 'The Countess and the Importance of Mathematics' (1990), 'The Garden of Mandrakes' (1991), 'The Fourth Rose' (1992) and 'Leda' (1993), which she created within the framework of a workshop of the National Center for New Performing Arts Tendency (CNNTE), a unit of the Inaem that was in operation between 1984 and 1994.

In 1993 he began a new artistic phase with the company Atra Bilis Teatro , which he founded with Gumersindo Puche, and with which he has put on successful shows that have toured the main festivals and stages of the world, such as the Avignon Festival - where he premiered his latest work in the Court of Honor of the Palais des Papes -, the Wiener Festwochen and the Odeon Theater in Paris. His works include titles such as 'The False Suicide' (2000), 'The Palavrakis Marriage' (2001), 'Once Upon a Time in West Asphixia' (2002), 'Hysteria Passio' (2003), 'And How Didn't Snow White Rot' (2005), 'The Year of Richard' (2005), 'Boxing for Cells and Planets' (2006), 'Dead Dog at the Dry Cleaners: The Strong' (2007), premiered at the National Drama Center, 'Anfaegtelse' (2008), 'The House of Strength' (2009), 'Cursed Be the Man Who Trusts in Man: An Alphabetization Project' (2011), 'Ping Pang Qiu' (2012), 'All Heaven Above Earth (Wendy Syndrome)' (2013) 'Gloria in Excelsis' (2014), 'Tandy' (2014), 'You are my destiny (Lo stupro di Lucrezia)' (2014), 'First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians' (2015), 'This Brief Tragedy of the Flesh' (2015), 'What shall I do with this sword?' The jury, chaired by the general director of Inaem, Paz Santa Cecilia Aristu , with the deputy general director of Theatre, Miriam Gómez Martínez, as vice president, was composed of the following members: journalist Daniel Galindo, editor Carlos Rod, actress María Morales, cultural manager Francesc Casadesús Calvó, professor and stage director Ana María Contreras Elvira - proposed by the Research Group on Feminisms and Gender Studies of the Royal School of Dramatic Art (RESAD) - and Ana Belén Santiago, artistic director of Teatro del Barrio, an entity awarded the 2024 National Theatre Award in the last edition.
