Bilbao presents a Corridas Generales with figures but reduced in two events: only Borja Jiménez doubles

BMF, the company that manages the Vista Alegre bullring in Bilbao, presented the posters for the upcoming Corridas Generales (General Bullfights) online this Friday. These events will be held in the third week of August and will be reduced to two major events this year, specifically without the traditional afternoon of bullfighting on horseback and the closing bullfight on the second Sunday of the season.
In a press release, following the poor financial results of recent bullfights, the bullfighting managers claim to have reached an agreement with the City Council, the owner of the bullring, "to restructure the bullfighting events starting this year" and "to present a new model of Corridas Generales within the Aste Nagusia, maximizing the quality of the bullfighting figures and the variety of livestock."
Even so, the afternoon of Monday the 18th, replacing the bullfighting event, has been reserved for a practical class for students from bullfighting schools, a qualifier for the final of the "Iván Fandiño" competition without picadors, which will be held on the morning of Friday, August 23.
The company believes that this "reiterates its commitment to maintaining the Vista Alegre bullring as a historical landmark of bullfighting" and is "making a commitment to generating greater interest and attraction among new generations."
As for the final lineups, presented just forty days before the fair begins, the presence of Borja Jiménez on two evenings stands out, followed by a single walk by Morante de la Puebla and Roca Rey, while Paco Ureña, who was not contracted for the previous edition, returns to Bilbao.
As for absences, the most significant are those of Miguel Ángel Perera , who had a great performance at last year's fair, that of the Aragonese novillero Aarón Palacio, who also triumphed resoundingly in 2024, and that of the Riojan Diego Urdiales , a classic of Bilbao, author of several masterful performances in this square in previous years.
The combinations of the only six major bullfights scheduled for the 2025 edition of Bilbao's always important bullfighting event are as follows:
- Sunday, August 17: Bulls from La Purísima, for Sergio Sánchez, Javier Zulueta and Martín Morilla.
- Tuesday 19th: Bulls from Dolores Aguirre, for Damián Castaño, the Frenchman Juan Leal and the Venezuelan Jesús Enrique Colombo.
- Wednesday 20th: Bulls from Fermín Bohórquez, for bullfighting on horseback, and from La Quinta, for bullfighter Guillermo Hermoso de Mendoza, Emilio de Justo and Borja Jiménez.
- Thursday 21st: Bulls from Victoriano del Río, for Juan Ortega, the Peruvian Roca Rey and Pablo Aguado.
- Friday 22nd: Bulls from Garcigrande, for Morante de la Puebla, Alejandro Talavante and Borja Jiménez.
- Saturday 23rd: Bulls from Fuente Ymbro, for Paco Ureña, Fortes and Fernando Adrián.
The advertising poster, which the company describes as "innovative and avant-garde," depicts a bull appearing through one of the famous Bilbao metro exits, designed by British architect Norman Foster , known colloquially as "fosteritos."
