One of the most acclaimed films of the last Cannes Film Festival has arrived in Spanish theaters, ready to move audiences with a story of redemption, loneliness, and affection between two marginalized individuals. Set in the arid landscapes of the Gobi Desert , this Chinese film, which won Best Film in the Un Certain Regard section of the French festival, connects the emotions between a young ex-convict and a supposedly rabid greyhound.
Black Dog , by director Guan Hu, also won the awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography at the Seminci in Valladolid. The story revolves around Lang (Eddie Peng), an ex-convict who returns to his hometown before the 2008 Beijing Olympics . There he finds a city in ruins , populated by stray dogs and ghosts from the past.

His life takes a turn when he crosses paths with an abandoned black greyhound accused of being infected with rabies. What begins as a forced alliance, in which he is left to care for the dog to determine if it is truly sick, becomes a powerful relationship of friendship and redemption. Black Dog has already captivated more than 250,000 viewers in France and has been praised for its sensitivity, symbolic narrative, and its way of reflecting the human condition through the animal's eyes.
Special ScreeningsGuan Hu constructs a contemporary fable, somewhere between a Western and a road movie , where the protagonist embarks on an emotional journey accompanied by his inseparable four-legged companion . The character, marked by guilt and isolation, finds in this dog a way to reconnect with what remains of his humanity.
In addition to international acclaim, the film has created a very special connection between the lead actor and the main character's dog, Xin, who was adopted by Eddie Peng after filming. The bond between the two transcended the screen and was also awarded the Palm Dog Award at Cannes 2024.
Black Dog was released in theaters on July 4th, and several pet adoption associations are joining in its screening in some Spanish cities, such as Vitoria and Oviedo , where they will participate in a discussion with viewers .
