The mayor on leave of San Pedro Garza García , Mauricio Fernández Garza , died early Tuesday morning at the age of 74. The PAN politician and businessman passed away after a long battle with cancer , according to sources close to his family.
On September 15, Fernández publicly confessed that he had decided to completely abandon medical treatments after months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy , which he described as "very burdensome." At that last press conference, he stated, "May it be what God wants."
A week earlier, he had announced that he would take a leave of absence between September 16 and 30, intending to present his first report and then permanently leave office to attend to his health.
Fernández's death occurred around 2:00 a.m., according to initial reports. In his absence, the mayor's office was left under the responsibility of the city clerk, Mauricio Farah .
Mauricio Fernández was one of the most controversial figures in Mexican politics. Known for his direct statements and confrontational style, he served on several occasions as mayor of San Pedro Garza García, considered the municipality with the highest purchasing power in the country.
The PAN member also stood out as a businessman and art collector. Throughout his career, his stances on security and cultural issues marked his profile as a distinctive politician, generating support and criticism in equal measure.
