The U.S. revokes the visa of Nogales Mayor Juan Francisco Gim.

The northern border is once again in the political spotlight. The mayor of Nogales, Juan Francisco Gim Nogales, confirmed that the United States government has revoked his visa. The incident has caused a stir, as he is the head of one of the country's most strategic municipalities, and it comes at a time when other high-ranking officials have also been sanctioned with similar measures.
According to unofficial reports, the mayor attempted to enter the United States on August 5 through the Dennis DeConcini port of entry. However, he was detained for several hours and later informed that his visa had been revoked.
In a video on social media, the mayor explained that the revocation of his visa was not related to any misconduct, but rather, in his words, a strictly administrative matter.
“I remain calm and have a clear conscience because I have not been accused of anything wrong,” Gim said. “I am sure that time will prove me right.”
The council member also reaffirmed his commitment to his public duties and asserted that he hasn't missed a single day of work, even participating in key binational meetings for border security.
The revocation of Juan Francisco Gim's visa adds to a growing list of Mexican officials against whom the United States has imposed immigration restrictions.
In May, Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila and her husband, Carlos Torres, also had their U.S. entry permits revoked, sparking speculation about a stricter policy from Washington toward Mexican political figures.
More recently, journalist Luis Chaparro revealed that Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo is listed as a "terrorist suspect" in U.S. databases, a claim the state government has categorically denied.
In this context, the decision against Gim Nogales resonates strongly. Although he maintains there are no charges against him, the action fuels an increasingly tense narrative between Mexican and U.S. authorities.
It's worth remembering that Juan Francisco Gim was reelected mayor of Nogales in June 2024 with the support of the "Let's Continue Making History" coalition (Morena, the Green Party, and the Labor Party). Since then, he has maintained an active agenda, particularly on security and international cooperation issues.
In his public message, he called for not falling into political confrontations:
"Nogales doesn't have to stop, much less me. Let's keep working together for our city," he concluded.
- Visa revoked after attempted border crossing.
- The mayor claims there is no crime and no formal charges.
- Other officials have faced similar restrictions.
- The United States appears to be toughening its stance toward Mexican politicians.
- The councilor maintains his duties and calls for unity.
