Enea's important step towards SMR reactors

• Enea has signed a letter of intent with the Świętokrzyska Industrial Group Industria (Industria), initiating cooperation in the implementation of SMR (small modular reactor) technology.
• The letter of intent provides for cooperation in the implementation of SMR technologies, including, among others, analysis of the possibilities of implementing and commercializing the technology and identification of potential locations.
• On May 10, 2024, the Minister of Climate and Environment issued a decision of principle for the industry regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant using SMR modular reactors using British Rolls-Royce SMR technology.

Enea announced that on 24 June 2025 it signed a letter of intent with the Świętokrzyska Industrial Group Industria (hereinafter referred to as Industria), initiating cooperation in the implementation of SMR (small modular reactor) technology.

SMRs are elements of Enea's future energy mix

The letter of intent provides for cooperation in the implementation of SMR technologies , including, among others, analysis of the possibilities of implementing and commercializing the technology, identifying potential locations, developing a business model and jointly conducting development work and making an investment decision.

It was added that the parties also declared their readiness to implement joint projects in these areas in the joint venture formula .

- The letter of intent is an announcement of strategic cooperation in the field of modern energy in Poland, the need to reduce CO2 emissions and the implementation of climate goals of energy technologies, which are one of the responses to the challenges related to the transformation of the European Union - said Grzegorz Kinelski, president of Enea.

He also stated that at Enea the development of SMR technology is perceived as one of the elements of the future energy mix.

- This is a technology that can support economic development in a stable and zero-emission way and increase the country's energy security. We want to be an active participant in this process - both as an investor and a technological and operational partner - said Grzegorz Kinelski.

SMR technology can now be implemented

The announcement of the signing of the letter of intent stated, among other things, that combining the competences of Enea and Industria, as well as their joint presence in the Świętokrzyskie Province, including the potential use of the Enea Połaniec Power Plant areas , "creates a solid foundation for the implementation of projects of strategic importance for the national power system."

- Recent decisions regarding SMR projects around the world – including the approval of the final investment decision by the Ontario government for the BWRX-300 project in Canada and the results of the Great British Nuclear government competition in the UK for the selection of technology for the construction of the first SMR units – clearly confirm that the technology of small modular reactors has reached a level of maturity that allows its implementation - said Grzegorz Bednarski, President of the Management Board of Industria .

Industria is a company from the Industrial Development Agency portfolio . In 2022, it signed a memorandum with Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd, thus starting cooperation in the implementation of small modular SMR reactors in Rolls-Royce technology in Poland.

On May 10, 2024, the Minister of Climate and Environment issued a decision in principle for the Industry regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant using SMR modular reactors using British Rolls–Royce SMR technology (two reactors with a total installed net electrical capacity of 940 MWe and a total thermal capacity of 2,716 MWt) and a spent nuclear fuel storage facility as an integral part of the nuclear power plant.
