The longest solar eclipse of the century has a date: where it can be seen in Spain, how long it will last, and recommendations for observing it.

In just two summers, the Iberian Peninsula will experience one of the most spectacular astronomical events in its recent history. The event will feature three total solar eclipses in a span of just 24 months, a phenomenon that has already been dubbed the ' Iberian trio ' by some astronomers. In that sense, after the eclipse in August 2026 and the expected one in 2028 , will come what many consider the jewel in the crown: in 2027 , the sky will darken for several minutes in broad daylight in what will be the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century . An event that promises to tinge the mornings with magic in much of Spain and that will attract thousands of observers from all over the world.
The big moment will arrive on August 2, 2027 , in the morning. In Spain, the full phase is estimated to begin around 10:45 a.m. in Ceuta and conclude around 10:50 a.m. In other locations along the timeline, the spectacle will be underway between 10:48 a.m. and 10:52 a.m. , according to calculations by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and Spanish astronomical observatories.
In two years, on August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross southern Spain. #Málaga will be among the best cities to enjoy it. The eclipse will occur around 10:50 a.m. It will be a historic event we will never forget... 🧵👇🏻 pic.twitter.com/dUzBp8XGwR

According to the IGN: "In this case, the band of totality will cross the Strait of Gibraltar from west to east, covering the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, almost the entire province of Cádiz, part of the province of Málaga, and the southernmost areas of Granada and Almería. The eclipse will occur in the morning, around 10:50 a.m. Spanish peninsular time, so the elevation of the Sun will facilitate observation of the eclipse. It will be visible as total in the aforementioned areas, but will also be partially visible in the rest of the country." Thus, from Ceuta and Melilla to a good part of southern Andalusia , the shadow of the Moon will completely cover the Sun.
Where will you be two years from now? On August 2nd 2027, the longest total solar eclipse for the rest of the century will be visible across the dark red line on this map. Let's discuss! pic.twitter.com/JhkXHL0ERY

Globally, this total solar eclipse will reach a record duration of up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds at its peak, located in Egypt . In Spain, the duration of totality will not be as long , but it will still be a remarkable experience: Ceuta will enjoy up to 4 minutes and 48 seconds of totality, the longest within the country. Other southern cities, such as Málaga, Granada, and Cádiz , will enjoy a shorter but equally spectacular experience.
Observing an eclipse of such magnitude requires more than just the desire to enjoy the spectacle; it requires prevention, foresight, and common sense . First and foremost, you should never look at the Sun without protection . It's essential to have approved glasses , and avoid using unsuitable devices, as a mistake can cause irreversible damage. Official organizations, such as the National Eclipse Commission (IGN) and the National Eclipse Commission (CNEC), are already preparing educational materials, interactive guides, and outreach campaigns on their official website to help you plan the best place and way to observe it.
Also, choosing your location in advance will be crucial: booking accommodation, assessing the horizon and weather conditions , because low clouds or adverse conditions can thwart even the most anticipated eclipse.
