Port Sudan airport and military base bombed by drones

A drone "targeted the civilian part of the airport," said a representative who spoke on condition of anonymity. A military source said another drone targeted the main military base in the city center. A third drone struck "a fuel depot near the port" in the center of this densely populated city.
On Monday morning, the country's main oil depot in Port Sudan caught fire, according to the Ministry of Energy, following a drone attack by paramilitaries. On Sunday, the military section of the airport was targeted by a drone attack that had already led to the suspension of flights, with the army blaming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitaries.
Conflict since April 2023The city has long been considered safe in the conflict that has been raging in the East African country since April 2023.
Sudan is in the throes of a power struggle between army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who leads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF, which has lost several positions in recent months, is increasingly using drones to strike deep into areas controlled by General al-Burhan's troops.
The army, driven out of Khartoum by the RSF at the start of the war, retreated east and relocated the seat of government to Port Sudan, which also houses UN agencies and hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Khartoum was recaptured from the paramilitaries at the end of March.
