La Santé Prison: Gérald Darmanin visited Nicolas Sarkozy
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin visited Nicolas Sarkozy at the Santé prison in Paris on Wednesday evening, a source close to the matter indicated on Thursday, October 30. The meeting, which took place in the presence of the prison director, occurred between 7:00 and 7:45 p.m., the same source continued, before a discussion between the Minister of Justice and prison officers regarding the security of the former head of state.
Convicted on September 25th and sentenced to five years in prison in the Libyan case for criminal conspiracy, Nicolas Sarkozy was incarcerated on October 21st at La Santé prison . This detention of a former president is unprecedented in the history of the Republic.
He has since filed a request for release, which the courts are expected to examine in the coming weeks. The former president is being protected by two security officers, an exceptional measure taken "in view of his status and the threats against him," explained Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez .
Gérald Darmanin had said before the former president's incarceration his intention to visit him, in order to "ensure that the security conditions are good for this detainee with an extraordinary status" , his entourage explained.
