Thionville. Bicycle storage at the station: increased capacity

Since May 28, a new service has been available to safely drop off your bike or scooter at Thionville train station, thanks to the installation of a facility that can accommodate up to 102 bikes and/or electric scooters. The Mob d'Emploi association, which manages it, can thus meet the demand of an ever-increasing number of users. "We needed to find additional space, and this service is enjoying growing success. Promoting soft modes of transport is an integral part of the ecological transition," explains Bernard Veinnant, vice-president of the Portes de France-Thionville urban community, responsible for the ecological transition and new forms of mobility.

This bike box, created on a site belonging to the SNCF, is accessible during the company's opening hours, i.e., on weekdays between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., and is not self-service. "We had imagined several locations, including one on the other side of the road. But we reached an agreement with SNCF Gares & Connexions, which made this space available as part of an agreement," adds Bernard Veinnant. The box also has ten charging points for the batteries of electric bikes.

Since its opening, this storage unit has been almost always 100% full. Especially since the bikes stored in the Mob d'Emploi premises were able to be moved there to make room.
Since mid-July and the departure of some users on vacation, there have been more free spaces, "but we have had to refuse storage contracts, since maximum storage capacity has been reached. We now have 225 storage spaces, as well as 220 contracts," says Daniel Weber, president of Mob d'Emploi.
Its cost: 182,000 euros including tax
Its cost is €182,000, including all taxes. The project received grants: €42,000 from the State, €31,000 from the Grand Est Region, and €47,000 from Alvéole Plus, an organization that helps finance facilities that contribute to increasing the number of bicycle spaces. The urban community also has a network of cycle paths spanning over 75 kilometers.
