US Open, Navarro question: no mixed doubles for Sinner in New York?

US Open, Navarro question: no mixed doubles for Sinner in New York?

Jannik Sinner remains without a partner for the mixed doubles exhibition tournament at the US Open, which will take place at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday, August 19th and Wednesday, August 20th. Organizers have announced the withdrawal of Emma Navarro , the current world number one's designated doubles partner. And here's a bit of a mystery, given that the American was announced via social media as competing in the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey, scheduled for next week. So, it wasn't a bolt from the blue. Why the about-face? It's not known at this time, but it certainly would have been a real tour de force for Sinner, given that Jannik (who is playing the semifinal against Atmane in Cincinnati this evening from 9 p.m.) could play the potential final in Ohio on Monday the 18th, the day before the start of the mixed doubles tournament in New York. And even if the winners will be flown to New York on a private plane, it certainly wouldn't be the most convenient option for him to attend the event. So, there's a chance Sinner might withdraw. However, if the world number one wants to take part in the million-dollar-per-pair competition, he will have to find another partner and must communicate his intention by 2 p.m. (American time) on Sunday, August 17th.

Paula Badosa and Tommy Paul also withdrew, and so Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, who were supposed to play alongside the American and Spaniard respectively, decided to play together, solving a problem for the organizers. The flurry of withdrawals favored the entry of another Italian pair into the main draw, as Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti secured their place in the main draw by right of ranking.
