Enel, Ansaldo and Leonardo together in Nuclitalia, the newco for research on new nuclear energy

ROME – Enel, Ansaldo Energia and Leonardo are joining forces in the newco Nuclitalia , which will be responsible for evaluating the most innovative and mature designs of new sustainable nuclear , with an initial focus on water-cooled Small Modular Reactors (SMR). The company's shares are held 51% by Enel, 39% by Ansaldo and the remaining 10% by Leonardo . Nuclitalia's shareholders have also defined the company's positions. The Board of Directors will consist of seven members and will be chaired by Ferruccio Resta, former rector of the Polytechnic University of Milan . Luca Mastrantonio, Head of Enel's Nuclear Innovation unit, will take on the role of CEO.

Nuclitalia will be responsible for research and study of advanced technologies and the analysis of market opportunities in the new nuclear sector. The process will include the definition of specific requirements for our country system and the selection of the most promising solutions based on an in-depth technical-economic analysis. The company will also examine opportunities for industrial partnerships and co-design with an approach based on innovation, environmental and economic sustainability and enhancement of the skills of the Italian supply chain . The establishment of the newco represents a “related party” transaction as Ansaldo Energia and Leonardo are companies subject to the common control of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Who are Ferruccio Resta and Luca Mastrantonio

The board of directors will have five managers from the shareholder companies – Enel, Ansaldo Energia, Leonardo – chosen on the basis of their skills. In the coming weeks, a technical committee will be set up to support Nuclitalia's technological analysis activities. Ferruccio Resta, born in 1968, rector of the Polytechnic University of Milan from 2017 to 2023 and currently head of the university's Foundation, has been chosen as president. Full professor of Mechanics applied to machines, he was also president of the Crui (Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities) and has over 300 scientific publications to his credit. He currently chairs the National Center for Sustainable Mobility Most, a scientific hub promoted by the Pnrr that brings together universities, research centers and companies, and the Bruno Kessler Foundation of Trento, a multidisciplinary research institution specialized in the field of technology, innovation, human and social sciences. He is also a member of the boards of directors of Allianz Italia, Fiera Milano, Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo and Acea . Seven years ago, Resta was awarded the honor of Commander of the Republic by President Sergio Mattarella.

Luca Mastrantonio, Head of Enel's Nuclear Innovation unit, will assume the role of CEO . Mastrantonio graduated in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Rome, has a PhD in Nuclear Plant Safety from the University of Pisa and a Master's degree from Eurofusion. He gained initial research experience at Italian universities and the Comissariat a l'energie atomique in France. Executive Manager with extensive experience in plant management in the energy sector (Nuclear, Oil & Gas), in innovation and in the process industry with increasing levels of responsibility in several multinationals. He served as Head of Nuclear Technological Systems in Enel during the construction of the two nuclear reactors at the Mochovce plant in Slovakia. He is currently Head of Enel's Nuclear Innovation unit, Board Member in Siet and advisor to the Italian Nuclear Association.
