From Factory to Home: Musk Announces First Driverless Tesla to Deliver to Your Doorstep

MILAN – From the factory to the customer’s home without a driver. This is the latest news announced by Elon Musk, who celebrated the first “autonomous” delivery of a Tesla on his X profile. “The first fully autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y , from the factory to the customer’s home across town — including highways — has just been completed a day early!!,” Musk wrote in a post. “There were no people inside the car or remote operators controlling it at any time. Fully autonomous! To our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous trip on a public highway with no people on board or remote control,” Musk wrote.

Tesla's chief executive did not elaborate on where the delivery would take place, but in a separate post, Tesla engineer Ashok Elluswamy posted a video showing the entire journey from a factory in Texas, also saying the Model Y reached a top speed of 72 miles per hour on the highway.

Waymo ’s self-driving cars have currently received regulatory approval to begin driverless testing on highways in 2024, according to their website, but they are not yet carrying passengers on highways. Aurora’s autonomous freight trucks have been operating in Texas since early May, including on a stretch of highway.
