Matcha tea businesses decline after anti-gentrification protests

Mexico City – Following the recent anti-gentrification protests in Mexico City, businesses that based their income on selling matcha tea at ridiculously high prices are reporting a worrying drop in sales.

White people are already afraid to come and pay $130 pesos for green water,” complained the owner of a shop located in Roma Norte, while removing his waxed mustache.

This situation has caused the guild of entrepreneurs with origami tattoos and Instagram accounts with names like @MatchaVibesCDMX to go into aesthetic and financial panic.

The anti-gentrification march has already claimed its first victims.

“I came to Mexico for its ancestral culture, but I can’t even sell matcha with oat milk… Is this structural violence?” complained a barista who declined to reveal his country of origin, but is clearly not from Iztapalapa.

During the march, several banners pointed to matcha, croissants (pronounced "croascan"), and $450 brunches as "passive-aggressive agents of urban displacement," which is why one of the protest's objectives was to demand price controls on organic products that taste the same as before but cost three times as much.

Before you call me a “chairo,” I live in Escandón and it makes me angry to be surrounded by rude and arrogant foreigners who don’t pay taxes.

As a form of reconciliation, the capital's authorities have proposed that the owners of these matcha businesses invite locals to a round of esquites and lower the price of the infusions to $20 pesos per cup, the same price they had before the arrival of gringos with active VPNs and eco-friendly flip-flops.

Meanwhile, some establishments are already adapting to the new normal by offering more inclusive products, such as "neighborhood matcha" and "tamarind kombucha."

And to better understand the series: we already know how much Florinda Meza earned for appearing in “El Chavo del Ocho.”
