Javier Milei is more in tune with Donald Trump: the Government aligned itself with the United States at the UN and stopped considering that Russia invaded Ukraine

In a complex vote before the United Nations General Assembly, Javier Milei was completely aligned on Monday with the position of Donald Trump, who unsuccessfully sought to have a softer resolution passed against Russia. That is, one that did not mention the invasion of Vladimir Putin's forces on February 24, 2022 as the cause of the war in Ukraine .
There were two resolutions. One proposed by Ukraine and the European Union, in which the invasion was condemned in the traditional language of three years ago. In that vote, Argentina, like the United States, abstained.
The second resolution is a modified text. It is a modified text of the one presented by Trump's representatives. And since it was strengthened through an amendment, it had 93 votes in favor, 8 against and 73 abstentions, including those of the United States and Argentina.
In the original resolution proposed by the United States, which was much lighter and had Russia's vote - the result of Trump and Putin's rapprochement - Argentina supported it, changing its historical position - which always condemned the invasion and harsh texts towards Moscow - since Milei was an ally of Joe Biden in the international arena and also of Volodymyr Zelensky.
The amendments were submitted by Europe and Ukraine to toughen the US proposal and allow it to be voted on. In other words, Trump's text, which now calls the Ukrainian president a "dictator" and demands "minerals" from his country to help him, called for a quick end to the conflict without making reference to Ukraine's territorial integrity, but the amendments by European countries included this reference to territorial integrity and called for a "fair peace." That is why Trump's representatives abstained, as did the Argentine representative Francisco Tropepi on orders from the Rosada.
The other resolution approved by the UN General Assembly is the one that reiterates its support for Ukraine and its territorial integrity. It received 93 votes in favor and 18 against, including those of the United States, Russia, Nicaragua, Niger, Burundi, and 65 abstentions, including those of Argentina, along with Cuba, China, Brazil, and Algeria. But the Government, which was in favor of the light resolution, did not support it, as did the United States.
The text was promoted by Ukraine and its allies. It reiterates the "commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine."
There could be more to come. Until today, the United States was leading the position condemning Russia's invasion and imposing sanctions in line with the European Union and some countries in other regions. On Monday, it made a 180-degree turn, but lost the vote.
With its abstentions, Argentina came closer to Trump's position in every way because it does not condemn the Russian invasion. It did not co-sponsor, as it did before, the resolutions presented by Ukraine. It does not adhere to the principle of "territorial integrity" that the country uses in its claim to the United Kingdom for the Malvinas. And it no longer plays with the West, but in a personalized way with the Republican president.
Milei met Volodymyr Zelensky three times - the first time when the Ukrainian came to his inauguration on December 10, 2023 - and they spoke on the phone on several occasions. Argentina promised military support that ultimately did not come to fruition.
