Spotify announces price increases for subscriptions globally. What will happen in Mexico?

Music streaming platform Spotify plans to raise subscription prices in "dozens of countries around the world," sources close to the company told the British newspaper Financial Times ( FT ) on Friday.
According to the Financial Times report, the price adjustment will be implemented starting in June of this year and will primarily affect individual plans in regions of Europe and Latin America . The expected increase would be approximately "the equivalent of one euro ," the cited sources said, although the exact figure could vary depending on the country.

SPOTIFY PRICE INCREASES WILL BE GRADUAL
In recent weeks, Spotify has already initiated the first adjustments to its rates in some markets such as the Netherlands and Luxembourg. However, the Financial Times warned that this measure will "intensify considerably" during the summer of 2025, expanding to many more countries.
The decision to increase fees is part of a strategy to strengthen the company's revenue in the face of rising licensing, operating, and exclusive content production costs. Spotify also faces a competitive landscape in the streaming market, where other platforms are also considering changes to their business models.
The United States will be the only country that will not face a price increase on its Spotify accounts.
The report notes that the United States, Spotify's largest market, will not experience any price changes this time around. The company had already increased its rates in that country in July 2024, so no further adjustments are expected in the short term.
At the time, Spotify justified the US increase as a necessary measure to continue investing in new features, exclusive podcasts, and record label deals.
Sources consulted by the Financial Times also mentioned that Spotify, along with other streaming platforms, is considering introducing a "super premium" service option. This option would cost approximately $6 per month (about €5.27) on top of the standard rate.
The "super premium" service would allow users to gain early access to new music releases, as well as concert tickets, in an effort to diversify revenue streams and offer exclusive benefits to subscribers willing to pay more.
Although this option has not yet been officially launched, leaks indicate that it could be part of Spotify's growth strategy in the coming months.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT SPOTIFY'S PRICE INCREASE IN MEXICO?
To date, Spotify Mexico has not issued an official statement confirming or denying the price adjustment in the country. The company is expected to provide an update in the coming weeks on whether Mexican users will be included in this new phase of increases.
Currently, Spotify Premium prices in Mexico vary depending on the type of plan you have:
- Individual : $129 pesos per month
- Duo : $169 pesos per month
- Family : $199 pesos per month
- Students : $69 pesos per month
Users in Mexico, as in other Latin American countries, could see the increase starting in June if the company decides to implement the adjustment strategy in this region.
The industry faces challenges related to artist royalties, the production of exclusive content, and expansion into emerging markets.
Spotify , which reported more than 600 million active users by the end of 2024, remains the global leader in audio streaming, but faces growing competition from platforms such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
