A 300-year-old painting in the Galleria degli Uffizi in the Italian city of Florence has reportedly been damaged after a visitor tripped over it, the BBC reports.

According to the Uffizi, the 1712 painting was damaged after a visitor tried to take a selfie with it. CCTV footage from the gallery's security reportedly showed the visitor leaning back, falling and tearing the canvas.

The painting is a portrait of the Tuscan prince Ferdinando de' Medici, painted by Anton Domenico Gabbiani. The exhibition of which the painting is part is temporarily closed. The artwork is supposed to be repaired in the coming week. After that, the exhibition will reopen.

The visitor has now been reported to the authorities.

In a similar incident earlier this month, tourists damaged a work of art at the Palazzo Maffei in Verona while trying to pose for a photo. One of the visitors sat on the so-called Van Gogh chair and fell through it.
