The Edge can finally call himself an Irish citizen. The 63-year-old guitarist of U2 was born in the United Kingdom, but has lived in Ireland for most of his life. On Monday, he was granted Irish citizenship during a ceremony in Killarney.

The famous guitarist spoke afterwards of "a monumental moment", according to the Irish public broadcaster RTÉ. "I'm a little late with the paperwork. I've lived in Ireland since I was a year old. But now is the right time and I couldn't be more proud of my country and everything it does. It couldn't have come at a better time for me."

David Howell Evans, as he is actually called, has been part of U2 since 1976, together with Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton and Bono. The band is known for songs such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, With or Without You and Beautiful Day.
