Global Carbon Budget Nears Expiration. 'The Climate Is Burning'
Professor Piers Forster, director of the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures at the University of Leeds and lead author of the study, says the level and rate of increase in global temperatures is “unprecedented”.
“Continued record-high greenhouse gas emissions mean more of us are experiencing dangerous levels of climate impacts. Temperatures have been rising year on year since the IPCC last reported in 2021, underlining that climate policy and the pace of climate action have not kept pace with what is needed to address these ever-increasing impacts,” he warns.
The deepening climate crisis is hitting developing countries, which have contributed the least to climate change, the hardest. Shiva Gounden, regional director of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, warns that moving away from fossil fuels is essential to avoiding climate catastrophe.
"We continue to hope and act, but what about the urgency from major emitters? Now is the time to stand in solidarity with those on the front lines of this crisis. The climate is burning and our lives are at risk," Gounden warns.
