The Nowe Miasto Lubawskie commune will change its name. Bratian will distinguish it.

• From January 1, 2026, the Nowe Miasto Lubawskie commune will change its name to the Bratian commune.
• Also from the new year, six cities will be added to Poland.
• The adoption of the project by the Council of Ministers is planned for the third quarter of 2025.

According to the draft regulation of the Council of Ministers regarding the establishment of the boundaries of certain municipalities and cities, granting city status to certain localities, and changing the name of the municipality, published in the list of legislative and programmatic works of the Council of Ministers, as of January 1, 2026, the municipality of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie will change its name to the municipality of Bratian . The draft is being prepared by the Ministry of Interior and Administration.

The change is due to the fact that in the Nowe Miasto Lubawskie district there are two municipalities: rural and urban, which results in, among other things, numerous errors in delivery .

The change of the commune's name results from the desire to stand out, increase the attractiveness of the given area and achieve recognition among other local governments.

The town of Bratian is the largest and most populous (1,549 inhabitants) town of the Nowe Miasto Lubawskie commune.

Also from 1 January 2026, the following towns will be granted city status: Janów Podlaski, Stanisławów, Małkinia Górna, Staroźreby, Branice and Janów .

The project also proposes six changes to the establishment of municipal boundaries (between the Piwniczna-Zdrój commune and the Rytro commune, between the Rytro commune and the Piwniczna-Zdrój commune, between the Zembrzyce commune and the Stryszów commune, between the Niepołomice commune and the Kłaj commune, between the Zakrzew commune and the city of Radom, between the city of Radzionków and the city of Piekary Śląskie) and nine changes to the establishment of city boundaries (in addition to the establishment of city boundaries resulting from the granting of city status, the establishment of boundaries applies to the cities of Strzelce Krajeńskie, Zbąszynek, Przytyk).

The adoption of the project by the Council of Ministers is planned for the third quarter of 2025.
