Bad news for tourists. Trains will not reach the resort in Masuria

If you dream of a vacation at Lake Kisajno, PKP Intercity does not have good news for you. This year, getting to Giżycko, despite announcements of changes, will still be difficult. The opening of the modernized line between the Masurian resort and Ełk will not premiere in June, as originally planned. Just like in Zakopane , passengers will have to use replacement buses. Alternative transport will be in force not only during this vacation, but also in autumn and winter.
Holidays in Giżycko only by busRail travel enthusiasts may be disappointed - we won't be able to get to Giżycko by train this summer. Although the opening of the Ełk - Giżycko section was initially planned for June after the already delayed modernization of the route, carriers in the further train will not be able to use the traction network. "Work will still be ongoing on the further part of line 38 to Korsze" - informs Rynek Kolejowy. "We do not plan to launch connections between Ełk, Giżycko and Olsztyn before the completion of the work. The service to Giżycko remains unchanged during the renovation" - says Maciej Dutkiewicz, spokesman for PKP Intercity. "Replacement transport is connected in Olsztyn with trains from the direction of Warsaw and the Tri-City" - we read.
This means that the route on the next train will be serviced by buses (similarly for Polregio trains). This is bad news for passengers, especially those with limited mobility or with large luggage, for whom traveling by train means greater convenience.
By train only next yearWhen will the first trains to Giżycko depart? The date remains unconfirmed, although PKP has announced that the railway works will be completed in December of this year. The electrification of the route will take much longer, until 2026. The first diesel trains of the PKP Intercity carrier will most likely depart on the route to Giżycko no earlier than March 2025. We will have to wait another dozen or so months for electric trains.
