This is not how you should sit during a flight. Expert has important advice for tourists

The unpleasant consequences of crossing your legs have been talked about and heard for years. Many experts have their own opinions on the subject, and some of them advise against sitting cross-legged. On the other hand, it is known that sitting cross-legged can be healthy, especially for people who have problems with their hips , knees or spine. Recently, one specialist revealed how you should never cross your legs during a flight.

Cross-legged on a plane? That's a mistake

Crossing your legs on a flight? A while ago, Mobility Solutions Direct’s senior care expert Lee Cartwright warned passengers – especially the elderly – against this type of sitting. “It may seem harmless to cross your legs on a flight, but it’s actually one of the worst things you can do for your health while travelling,” he commented.

The man emphasized that crossing your legs while traveling can lead to back and joint pain, and more seriously, it can restrict blood flow in your legs, increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Ultimately, it can even lead to death.

It turns out that the greatest risk is posed by older people. “As we age, blood circulation slows, muscle strength decreases, and the valves in our veins may not work as effectively,” Cartwright explained.

This way of sitting will be safe

The expert also shared some good tips for passengers. He advises that instead of sitting cross-legged, you should take care of your health and comfort. In his opinion, it is worth:

  • Move around throughout the flight (if the trip is long) – this means getting up every hour or two to stretch or walk down the aisle,
  • Keep your legs stretched forward as much as possible (if possible),
  • Keep your body hydrated,
  • Use compression socks or tights,
  • Do simple leg movements while sitting – this involves bending your feet, rotating your ankles and gently lifting your knees every 30 minutes.

It is important to remember that sitting incorrectly with your legs crossed for too long can cause, among other things, a clot and swelling in one of your legs, shortness of breath, severe cramps, or cause the skin to become discolored - just above the clot it may appear redder and warmer.
