Even a 100 zloty fine. Don't do it on a train, unless you're traveling by Wars

Many passengers wonder about the legal consequences of drinking alcohol on board a train. It turns out that the company of alcoholic beverages can cause passengers a lot of problems if they open them in places not designated for this. Legally, alcoholic beverages can only be consumed in the dining cars, provided that they were purchased there in advance. If the conductor catches us with an open beer in the compartment, we risk a penalty.

Alcohol on the train only in Wars

Can you drink beer and other alcoholic beverages on a train? Passengers have many doubts about the possible consequences of opening a bottle of alcohol on the train. PKP Intercity specifies in its regulations when such behavior may result in a penalty imposed by the Railway Protection Guard or the police called by the conductor. Restrictions on alcohol consumption are also regulated by Article 14. 1. of the Act on Sobriety Education.

If we reach for alcohol, for example, in a compartment or corridor, we risk a fine of up to PLN 100. The only places where it can be legally consumed are restaurant cars and buffets (not available on every train) , where during domestic journeys "the sale, serving and consumption of alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of up to 4.5% and beer is permitted."

Additionally, on international trains, the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of over 4.5% is also permitted at tables in restaurant cars, including beverages with an alcohol content of over 18% served only with meals.

Higher fines for smoking cigarettes

The regulations regarding alcohol have changed to the benefit of passengers, because before 2011, alcoholic beverages could not be purchased on board the train at all, and consuming your own alcohol could result in a fine of up to PLN 500.

At the same time, in the last decade, penalties for smoking tobacco products have become much more severe during train journeys. Here, the possible consequences can cost the passenger a lot - from PLN 500 to even PLN 1,900 if the train is stopped due to the passenger's fault.

"Since 15 November 2010, a total ban on smoking in public places, including trains, has been in force in Poland. The above change results from the amendment to the Act on the Protection of Health from the Consequences of Using Tobacco and Tobacco Products," informs PKP.
