Experience the thrills of one of the world's largest, in Monsaraz

Experience the thrills of one of the world's largest, in Monsaraz

It was during a casual conversation with António Fialho, a councillor for Culture and Heritage at the Reguengos de Monsaraz City Council, that the challenge arose: to bring the work of one of the country's most notable names in the visual arts to a place where it is rarely seen. The result will be inaugurated this Friday at the Church of Santiago in Monsaraz and at the Municipal Library of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Under the title "Pedro Cabrita Reis, Landscape, Figure and Still Life", an exhibition will be held featuring two dozen recent works of painting and wall sculptures made with found materials, from the "Natura Morta" series.

"These places force me to think of another way of showing my work and allowing people who don't know what I do to discover it", explains the artist, one of the most important figures in Portuguese contemporary art, with a consolidated career at national and international level, being widely recognized for his multidisciplinary work that crosses painting, sculpture, installation, photography and drawing.

“What an artist does is introduce a different perspective”, says Pedro Cabrita Reis

With a career that has led him to represent Portugal at major international events such as documenta IX (1992, in Kassel), the São Paulo (1994 and 1998) and Venice (2003 and 2013) biennials, and which includes his works in prestigious collections such as the Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Serralves Museum and the MAAT, among many others, Pedro Cabrita Reis did not hesitate to accept the local authority's invitation. "I like being able to take what I do to the interior of the country. I like the idea of exhibiting in places outside the major urban centres and this exhibition in Reguengos is proof of that."

Provocative and emotional, Pedro Cabrita Reis is still a regular presence in the most prestigious galleries and museums, and has also developed important public art projects, such as the monumental sculpture "Central Tejo", in Lisbon, which has become an icon of contemporary Portuguese urban art. Over the years, he has also played an important role as a curator, teacher and influencer in the Portuguese art scene.

Now and until October 5th, the artist's works can be visited daily at the Church of Santiago, between 9.30 am and 5.30 pm, and from Monday to Saturday at the Municipal Library, from 10 am to 5.30 pm.
