This Wednesday, July 9th, Foz do Arelho beach had red flags raised due to the sighting of a shark, but normality has now been restored.

The Caldas Council reported that it is, “allegedly, a species of shark quite common in Portuguese waters (Prionace glauca, commonly known as dogfish or blue shark), frequently caught by fishermen, intentionally or inadvertently”.

The municipality emphasizes that “in a normal situation there is no reason for alarm”, but “in the case of sightings closer to the coast (where they move to catch fish, as appears to have been the case), it is not recommended that swimmers remain in the water”.

The municipality emphasizes that "although it is a very common presence in Portuguese coastal waters and should not therefore cause great concern, the usual procedure to adopt in these situations is to raise a red flag and for lifeguards to provide information to bathers."

This, they state, is “a one-off situation and, after adopting these precautionary measures, there is no reason for alarm or concern” and, “if they are sighted again, it is recommended that the situation be reported to the lifeguards or to the Peniche Port Authority”.
