Haddad says Eduardo acts on behalf of the Bolsonaro family to conspire against Brazil

Haddad says Eduardo acts on behalf of the Bolsonaro family to conspire against Brazil

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said this Thursday (10) that licensed federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) is acting on behalf of his own family to conspire against Brazil in the United States. This would be the reason why President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tax on Brazilian products exported there.

For the minister, there is an “internal force against the national interest in favor of individual interest”.

"This is publicly admitted by the person in the United States, on behalf of the Bolsonaro family, conspiring against Brazil and threatening the country, saying that if there is no amnesty, the situation will worsen. What does this mean? I know of no historical precedent for something as shameful as this family's attitude," he told the Barão Entrevista channel earlier.

For him, the tariff hike imposed by Trump has left Brazilian economic sectors "on edge," seeking the government to find a solution "to a problem created by one family." Eduardo Bolsonaro has not publicly admitted to having orchestrated the tax, but he has defended his North American ally .

"Over the past 15 years, we've had a goods and services deficit of over $400 billion with the United States. There's no economic rationality in the measure that was taken," he said.

The 50% surcharge on Brazilian products was described by Haddad as “unsustainable, both from an economic and political point of view,” and the minister said he did not believe it would be maintained.

Haddad argued that, with an average effective tariff of 2.7%, below the global average of 5.2%, the United States adopted a selective protectionist stance against Brazil.

"It's a type of narrative that doesn't adhere to reality. If it did, we should be negotiating, but we don't even do that," he added.

Haddad emphasized that the United States is the largest foreign investor in the country and that there are relevant common agendas, such as technology and energy transition.

Among the arguments used by Trump to overtax Brazilian imports is what would be political persecution of Bolsonaro in the process that investigates an alleged coup attempt after the 2022 elections. For him, Brazil is promoting a "witch hunt" against the former president, describing the situation as "a disgrace" and demanding that the judicial process against him be closed.

The American also justified the imposition of tariffs by alleging economic losses and denouncing alleged "secret and illegal orders" against media platforms in the United States that, he says, violate freedom of expression.
