Vakhit Khamzatkhanov and Takhir Begeldiev, members of the gang of Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab, involved in the attack on military personnel in the North Caucasus in 1999, were sentenced to 24 and 21 years in a maximum security penal colony, respectively. This was reported by the official representative of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia Svetlana Petrenko.

It was established that Begeldiev and Khamzatkhanov voluntarily joined the gang in 1999. The defendants actively participated in the commission of serious and especially serious crimes. On the morning of October 4, 1999, in the Chechen village of Chervlennaya, gang members, including Khamzatkhanov and Begeldiev, acting under the leadership of Khattab, attacked servicemen of a military unit of the Ministry of Defense. Massive shelling resulted in the death of 15 servicemen, and another 28 were wounded.

According to Petrenko, the court found the evidence collected by the Investigative Committee and the FSB sufficient. Khamzatkhanov and Begeldiev were found guilty of participating in a gang (Part 2 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code), armed rebellion (Article 279 of the Criminal Code), and attempting to kill military personnel (Article 317 of the Criminal Code).

On May 27, the FSB, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Russian National Guard, and the Investigative Committee, detained four members of the gang who had taken part in attacks on Russian military personnel in 1999 and 2000 in Chechnya and Dagestan. In early June, the Southern District Military Court sentenced four participants in the attack on the Pskov paratroopers in 2000 to a maximum security prison colony for terms ranging from 13 to 24 years. The investigation established that on February 29, 2000, the convicted members of Basayev and Khattab's gang took part in an attack on servicemen of the Pskov Airborne Division near the village of Ulus-Kert in the Shatoi District of the Chechen Republic.

Basayev's armed forces carried out a series of terrorist attacks in the mid-1990s. In particular, the criminals took hostages in Budyonnovsk and in the Moscow theater center on Dubrovka. Basayev himself was killed on July 10, 2006, during a special operation by the FSB.
