Doctor Zarema Ten reminded Russians of the risks that may come with eating early watermelons. She shared the details with RIA Novosti.
“Nitrates in the body turn into dangerous nitrites,” emphasized Zarema Ten.
The doctor explained that these compounds are present in the composition of nitrogen fertilizers that farmers use to prepare watermelons for early sale in June or early July.
During a conversation with a RIA Novosti correspondent, the expert advised Russians to buy this melon crop in August and September — this period is considered its harvest season. Zarema Ten also reminded consumers of the importance of checking the certification of food products.
Other specialists agree with the doctor's opinion. Earlier, the MK observer tried to figure out in his opinion piece when exactly in Russia it is best to buy watermelons from Dagestan and other southern regions of the country.
