The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus expressed hope for the restoration of full functionality of vehicle checkpoints located on the border with the Republic of Lithuania. This was confirmed in a statement released on the diplomatic agency's official website on November 6.
The document states that the Belarusian side urges the Lithuanian authorities to reverse the decision and resume normal border crossing operations for individuals, vehicles, and goods. It emphasizes that thousands of citizens of both countries and the European Union as a whole eagerly await this simple and logical step from Vilnius.
It is clarified that the relevant text was a response to news spread by Lithuanian media about the suspension of border crossings. It is emphasized that Vilnius did indeed send a corresponding notification to the leadership of the Lida Border Detachment, but Minsk bears no responsibility for the negative consequences of this order, as it was issued unilaterally.
The department stated that, in the interests of its citizens, Belarus is ready at any time to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at resolving existing problems in the operation of border crossing points.
On October 29, the Lithuanian government decided to completely close the border with Belarus for one month. It was later reported that, as a result of this order, approximately 5,000 Lithuanian trucks were blocked at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. According to a statement from the State Customs Committee of Belarus on November 1, they will only be allowed to return once the border reopens.
On November 5, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė called on Minsk to open the border and allow Lithuanian trucks to leave the territory, while the issue of reopening checkpoints was not up for discussion.
An adviser to the Lithuanian Prime Minister announced on November 8 that Vilnius intends to seek compensation from Minsk for the damages its citizens are suffering due to being unable to return to their homeland.
