Developed by Turkish scientists: This glove will revolutionize the field of health

A glove that will facilitate material counting during surgeries was designed by faculty members Prof. Dr. Gülay Yılmazel, Dr. Faculty Member Ayşe Çalmaz and Dr. Faculty Member Remziye Cici, who specialize in machinery and manufacturing technologies and conduct studies in the field of health at Hitit University. The designed glove will ensure that sterility is maintained, especially in operating rooms, and that counting processes are carried out correctly and safely. Since there are few areas to take notes in surgeries, the counting glove will provide great convenience for healthcare professionals during material counting and will also protect the sterile area. The glove, designed as a first in the world, received design registration from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. It was stated that the application process for the product's utility model registration is also ongoing.

Since there are few areas where counting notes can be written in surgeries, the counting glove will provide great convenience for healthcare workers and will also protect the sterile area during material counting. The counting glove functions thanks to a pocket placed on its upper part. The text written on the pocket with a sterile pen is transferred to the note paper inside. In this way, the procedure can be carried out in a sterile manner without removing the note paper.

"Counting gloves will provide advantages in maintaining sterility and counting safety"

Providing information about the glove made, Health Sciences Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Gülay Yılmazel said, "The name of our invention is 'counting glove.' The technical field it is related to is the field of sterile glove usage. Sterile glove is a medical consumable produced in single-use, sterile packages. This glove is a product that must be worn by healthcare personnel in situations where interventions are required in sterile areas of the body, such as open wound care, urinary catheter insertion and surgical operations. In addition, the use of sterile gloves is a must in situations where the sterility of the medical materials used must be maintained. It is of great importance that these gloves are used in accordance with the donning and doffing instructions. Otherwise, the risk of infection may increase. Our counting glove invention is designed to provide advantages not only in operating rooms, but also in terms of maintaining sterility and performing counting operations correctly and safely."

"The Counting Glove aims to make a significant contribution to both health and science"

Stating that they designed the glove by getting inspiration from the difficulties they experienced in operating rooms, Dr. Faculty Member Ayşe Çalmaz said, "The idea of the counting glove emerged at the point where we encountered crisis management processes during our work in the operating room environment. Patient safety in operating rooms is an extremely critical and priority issue. A counting process is carried out regularly during the procedures carried out in this area. However, this counting process is usually carried out in semi-sterile areas. Because there is not enough space to take notes in a completely sterile area. Based on this need, we invented the counting glove. Thanks to this invention, the nurse who manages the sterile area will also be able to provide effective crisis management against unexpected developments that may occur during the surgery, such as an extension of the surgery time, personnel changes or the opening of additional supplies. In this way, both patient safety will be ensured and the rates of re-admission to the hospital, infection risks and complications that may develop afterwards will be minimized. The counting glove has received a design registration from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office as an innovative product that facilitates crisis management of healthcare personnel in high-risk environments such as operating rooms. In addition, the utility model application process of the product is still ongoing at the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. In this respect, the counting glove is an important contribution to both the health field and science. aims to make a contribution,” he said.

"Reducing the stress on healthcare professionals"

Emphasizing that the counting glove will provide great convenience in preventing possible negative situations during surgery, Dr. Faculty Member Remziye Cici from the Faculty of Health Sciences said, "Surgical procedures are quite complicated areas where a large number of materials and tools are used. For this reason, it is of great importance for surgical nurses, especially operating room nurses, to double-count the materials used before, during and just before the incision area is closed and to record these procedures. The counting glove, which we designed to prevent unwanted situations during surgeries, prioritizes patient safety, reduces the stress on both nurses and other healthcare professionals; makes the counting process easier and safer."
